Nestled in the West Texas desert, surrounded by a pecan orchard and the quiet sounds of nature, is Sonic Ranch – the world’s largest residential recording studio. As technology changes the way music is made and shared, Sonic Ranch stands out by focusing on real human creativity.
The rise of artificial intelligence has changed how songs are written, produced and heard. According to Forbes, “generative AI models are now creating songs indistinguishable from human compositions.” Recent advances in machine learning have made it possible for AI to produce convincing music in seconds.
While AI can now generate music from just one prompt, studios like Sonic Ranch continue to prioritize the human touch while emphasizing collaboration. Felipe Castaneda, an audio engineer with nearly a decade of experience, says the studio’s current atmosphere helps fuel artists’ creativity.

“We stay as true as we can to music and let the heart of the artist speak in the studio,” Castaneda said. “That’s why we have all of these private spaces and very vibey rooms, so they (artists) can get inspired.”
AI-generated music is not a new phenomenon in the industry, but it has gained more attention in recent years.
In November 2023, the Beatles released what was promoted as their last song, titled “Now and Then,” using AI-assisted technology to restore a home demo sung by John Lennon. In February 2025, the song won a Grammy Award for best rock performance.
AI can achieve this by analyzing patterns and data from existing songs, then using what it learns to create new music, without a single breath or strum from a real person.

At Sonic Ranch, emphasis on the human element shapes how music is made. Engineers like Castaneda take time to understand each band’s sound and vision, often asking for a list of artists that inspire them or demos to get a sense of what they want. This helps him prepare before the musicians arrive at the studio.
Artists also face challenges in growing their audiences due to the way streaming platforms operate. Services like Spotify make it more challenging for listeners to discover underground or lesser-known artists. A 2022 study by Music Tomorrow found that three major record labels account for most of the songs on Spotify’s biggest playlists.

Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group accounted for about 70% of Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist, which features new releases from established and emerging artists every Friday.
Additionally, thousands of new songs are added to streaming platforms every day, making it even harder for artists to stand out. Many listeners discover new music through these playlists, so placement affects which artists gain more traction.
With new technology and industry pressures, artists are releasing music faster than ever. This quick pace has changed how people listen. Castaneda says that many people simply play songs in the background, without really paying attention.
“We’re just hearing now but not actually listening,” Castaneda said. “Maybe there will be a new way that we learn how to consume or listen to music to make it special again.”

For artists seeking a more personal way to make music, Sonic Ranch offers a quiet space in the desert, a near hour drive from El Paso city distractions. Its studios, equipment and staff give musicians the tools they need to work at their own pace and create songs they can be proud of.
As technology moves quickly and the music industry keeps changing, Sonic Ranch provides musicians with the space and resources to focus on their craft and experiment with new possibilities.
